This is one of the last Maxi's to leave the Cowley assembly line in July 1981 and is a top of the range HLS model with Walnut dash, velour upholstery and twin carbs on a 1750 E series engine so picks up quite fast for a 1960's design. The Maxi was famous for being the last Issigonis design to emerge in 1969 but was ahead of its time having 5 doors and 5 gears - one of the most famous people to drive one was John Lennon who crashed his in Scotland with Yoko onboard delaying the start of the Abbey Road album by 7 days. He was so impressed with the structural integrity of the car he had it shipped to his home in Tittenhurst and mounted on a pedestal. He later sold the house to Ringo Star who immediately had the car removed and crushed.
The car appeared in many TV series and films made in the 1970's including The Professionals, Fawlty Towers and National Lampoon's European Vacation where it knocks over Stonehenge. You can read more about this remarkable car here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_Maxi
